I had a few good conversations with John on his many visits home. I also remember going to the family home in Sarnia at 15 years old and being instantly impressed by him and the life he and Sarah made for themselves in Canada. He and Sarah are the best examples of Irish immigrants who worked hard and raised their family with an emphasis on education. And of course I was blown away by his skilled woodwork and warm personality. All of this made John unique among family relations making him someone I could look up to and aspire to become!
Years later I remember speaking to John in my parents house along with my partner Grace. I was telling him about the post grad dissertation I was writing at the time and he said 'fair play to you'. Three words that meant a lot coming from him.
Rest in Peace John and condolences to all of his Devine family. From Ruairi, Grace, Odhran, Amelia and Oisin.
