Obituary of John Harold Goodwin
John was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on August 31, 1932. Eldest son of Gladys (Foster) and Harold Goodwin. John’s brother, Bob, and sister Lynn Smith (Larry) still live in St. Thomas. John had many nieces and nephews: Lori Chamberlain, Craig Smith, Stacy Halkidis, Marie Chisholm, and Sam, Andrew, Bill & David Goodwin.
Best friend of 55 years, Lyn Bower will miss his happy approach to life, accepting with gratitude all that life had to offer.
In his early years John worked at Goodwin Furniture House Ltd, St Thomas and enjoyed being in the Elgin Regiment Militia. At Western University, London, he earned an Honours Journalism Baccalaureate degree. John worked at the Oshawa Times until he retired. In retirement, John was active in Sarnia as a Golden K member (Kiwanis), a Board member of the Sarnia Concert Association and as a member at Grace United Church. John’s Community service was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year for his dedicated involvement and was on the Mayor’s Honours List.
John and Lyn enjoyed many vacations visiting all continents in their travels. They shared a special appreciation of Canada’s Far North. Also sharing a common interest in Geography and History, they were avid readers of both.
Thank you to the staffs of Alzheimer Society, VON, Fairwinds Lodge and at Bluewater Health for their continued care.
