Obituary of Susan Carey
CAREY, Mary Anne Susan (nee Smythe) – Peacefully with her family by her side, at Bluewater Health, Susan Carey died on Monday, December 18, 2023, at the age of 78. Beloved wife of Richard “Dick” Carey for 57 years. Loving mother of Margaret “Meg” Carey (Scott Charles), Burlington, Michael Carey (Josette Chen) Toronto, and Monica LeBlanc (Jason), Toronto. Cherished grandmother of Max Carey, Eve Carey, Evan Charles, Delaney LeBlanc, Sarah Charles, Aubrey LeBlanc, Charlotte Carey and Brendan LeBlanc. Dear sister of the late Bern Smythe (Carolyn), Dresden, Barb St. Pierre, Sarnia and Catherine Matthews (Jim Caldwell), Iroquois. Sister-in-law of the late Don Carey, late Doug Carey (Marlene), late Barb Campbell (Doug), Blenheim and Elizabeth Alderton (Ron), St. Thomas. Also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Bernard & Marion Smythe.
Susan was an elementary teacher in London, Ontario for 10 years. After taking time off to raise her children, she then became a Probation and Parole Officer in Chatham and Sarnia. Susan was a long-time member of the Sarnia Golf & Curling Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Catholic Women’s League. In her retirement she spent time traveling with Dick, loved hiking across Ontario and Europe and best of all spending time with her grandchildren. Sue will be remembered for all her incredible hugs. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Lilly and the palliative care team at Bluewater Health for the compassionate care of Susan.
Visitation will be held at the McKENZIE & BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 431 N. Christina St., Sarnia, on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Church (Bright’s Grove) on Thursday, December 21st at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, friends who wish may send memorial donations to St. Vincent de Paul Society or the Bruce Trail Conservancy.
