Dear Barbara and Carolyn,
I learned just a few days ago that your Mom passed away. I was so sorry to hear that. I am the wife of George Skene. Your Mom was in the wedding party of my in-laws Patty and Alex Skene who were married July 19, 1947. Patty passed away in 2016 and Alex in 2019. I met your parents a couple of times, the last being on Patty's and Alex's 60th wedding anniversary in Thornhill in 2007. Your Dad passed away the following year. I tried to contact Doris when Alex died in 2019 but to no avail. Your Mom was a lovely lady . I know I recently came across a beautiful letter she wrote me many years ago. Losing a Mom is such a significant loss. May she rest in peace with your Dad and may you and your families be comforted by many fond memories. Take care.
Stephanie Leon Skene

Dear Barbara and Carolyn,
A memorable moment for me was your Mother's reaction to my sermon proclaimed at Central United Church on October 29, 1995. It was the 163rd anniversary of the congregation. In fact, I still have the handwritten notes I used and just now I have re-read them. The message was reflective of my interests at the time: that the Jesus' movement brings soul. Doris' reaction was positive. In the gym where the coffee was served afterwards, your Mother had a welcoming smile for me when I entered the hall.
When people, who have known us from our youngest days, are affirming of our accomplishments, then that feels important. My message on that particular Sunday was eighteen years after my ordination. People had known me as a younger person, but on that day it was time to share what I had become. I was 44 and the second half of my career was just beginning.. Doris approved. At least that was my takeaway.
I regret to say that I will not be able to attend the funeral on Friday. A daughter's 40th birthday celebration will take Ann and me to Ottawa on Friday.
The verse for this day is from Isaiah 28:16: "See, I am laying a sure foundation, whoever relies on it will never be stricken with panic." This verse makes me think of the sure foundation we received through the times together: of our families and of our friends at Central United Church, Sarnia. Thanks for your friendship in my early years. Verse 17 gives a life's mission: God says, "and I will take justice for a measure and righteousness as a level." May the service on Friday be especially formative for all. sincerely, Ross Carson.

Dear Ross, Thank you so much for your lovely words and scriptures. Mom was special and and our church did give us a strong foundation for living. We did have some great times on Oakdale and at Central. I think the service went well and Mom would have loved it. Thank you again for your kindness. Barbara and Carolyn
