I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Joe passing away. We had many fun conversations at two-pitch baseball games,
teacher conferences, and at the teacher's golf league regarding sports, the teachers' world and our families. I was always
impressed how everytime he would ask how each member of my family was keeping and doing. Joe enjoyed with much pride,
talking about his family too. I would tease Joe sometimes about his beloved Notre Dame teams and Blackhawks and would
receive that low growling response "yea right". Joe was indeed one of those soft speaking solid gentlemen who always had time to listen to people with interest. I will miss him very much.
My sympathies to Vickie, Chris, Kelli, and the grandchildren.
A friend,
Jim Harvie

Vickie,
I am so very sorry for loss. The tribute to Joe sums up the man I knew very well, quiet and unassuming, Notre Dame has lost a huge fan and supporter.
My thoughts go out to you, Kelli and Chris. Be strong together.

We wanted to send our love and prayers to Vickie, Chris and Kel. We feel so blessed we had to opportunity to get to know Joe when we lived in Cananda. Mark remembers all the games of golf they played together and l remember the extraordinary hospitality Joe would always show us, especially when we would come for a swim over summer. We were always blown away by the love he had for his family, showing this in big and small things he would do for Kel to help her out. One of our most cherished memories was when we witnessed his passion for Notre Dame when he took us to a game. We will hold Joe in our hearts and be forever grateful that we had the opportunity to meet such a kind and caring gentleman.

Vickie, Kelli, Chris, MaryAnn and Family,
Lise and I were so saddened to hear of Joe's passing this week. I had the opportunity to teach with Joe at St. Helen's School for several years. I was always admired how he conducted himself as an educator. Always quiet and calm, regardless of the challenges one faces in such a "people rich" environment. He was a wonderful role model for students. As well, I had the opportunity to share the softball sports fields with Joe both in the Industrial Fastball League and, more recently, in the Retirees Two-Pitch League. Always positive, Joe reflected the same quiet demeanour and respect to his teamates and the opposition. Joe always showed an interest in the well being of others, and certainly was proud of his family too. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

We were shocked to hear this news. As neighbours of Joe we often saw him washing his car, cutting the grass or walking the dog with Vickie. I played baseball with Joe several years ago and we shared pool stories and a love of university football among other common interests. Joe will be remembered as a wonderful, kind man; sadly missed by all who crossed his path. R.I.P.

Vickie, Chris, Kelli and family. I remember Joe as a kind and gentle friend who always made you feel welcome. Our golf outings were always a pleasure with lots of talk about sports, usually Notre Dame football. He was a quiet guy but enjoyed a good laugh. Joe was so very proud of his family and always shared stories and updates on how everyone was doing. My condolences during this sad time. He was a good man who will be missed.

Dear Chris, Kelli, Mrs. Cowley, and family,
I was saddened to read about Mr. Cowley’s passing. Whether as my sixth grade teacher, junior basketball coach, or later when I got to know him as a friend of the family, he was always a caring, kind, and supportive guy with a good sense of humour.
Conversations with Mr. Cowley, which usually began with talk about sports (the Irish, the Hawks, or the Tigers, of course), often resulted in talk about family, friends and sharing life experiences.
My sincere condolences during your time of grief. May we all remember the fond memories, including those trips to Florida.

My condolences to Vickie & family. Very sorry hear about Joe's passing. I occasionally golfed with Joe, refereed hockey with him, and was refereed by him. When we got together we usually talked about sports (Notre Dame usually crept in the conversation). It was always a good experience. He will be missed.

Dear Vickie, Chris, Kelli, and family, I am sad to hear of Joe's passing and wish to offer our sincere condolences.
I was fortunate to have worked a good number of years along side Joe in the OHA, I have fond memories and concur with the the notation of Joe being a quiet man and a man of integrity. I witnessed that each time we were on the ice. Both of these attributes served him and our crew well in tense situations on the ice. He just was a great guy to work with..
Many great laughs driving to our games. Joe often wore his lucky green Notre Dame scarf on the road and he always requested we stop to pick up a lottery ticket whiile on the road. I know he would rub the scarf before going into the store, but I am not sure if it paid off in any big win. The tribute was great and certainly brought great memories of our years working together.
Hugh and Pauline Devin.

POINT EDWARD SENIOR HOCKEY (PESH) - Bill Watson
Condolences to the Cowley Family from all the PESH players.
I knew Joe for a number of years thru hockey. Joe was our head referee for the PESH hockey team.
Joe was a lot better ref than a lot of us were as players ( we might miss the pass but Joe NEVER missed the calls).
Joe was a member of PESH and not just the referee, but an integral member of the team.
At our annual Christmas party in 2022 I had got a hold of one of Joe's whistles and worked with the trophy shop to make up an award for Joe - The Silver Whistle Award. This award was for excellence in refereeing for our group. With 60 or so players in attendance you could see the past and present players were thrilled to honor Joe.
Once a month or so we had pizza brought in for after the game. Joe had a special request for a pizza and we always had Joe's pizza on hand for him.
He will be sorely missed by the PESH team.
